The th XPOSED International Queer Film Festival Berlin

New festival dates: August 11-15, 2021 // New festival direction from 2022 onwards // Deadline for Queer Short Film Fund postponed

Due to the restrictions related to Covid-19 and the temporary shutdown of various cultural institutions, the XPOSED team has decided to postpone the festival from May to August. The 15th edition of the XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin will take place from August 11-15th, 2021.

Festival Directors Bartholomew Sammut and Merle Groneweg on the current situation: ‘After moving the 15th edition to 2021 we knew for sure: XPOSED will be happening. The interaction with our community is a central part of the event, which is why we want to use every chance to ensure the festival can take place in a hybrid form that would further serve our community and filmmakers.’

The festival will return to its home, the beloved Moviemento Kino, as well as WOLF Kino. For 2021 the XPOSED locations will further expand: parts of the program are planned to be shown at IL Kino, Atelier Gardens Open Air Cinema @ BUFA, Open Air Kino Mitte and Freiluftkinos Kreuzberg and Rehberge. The online program will happen in partnership with the Salzgeber Club.

Still, the premise is seen with caution: If the festival will happen as a hybrid version with analogue and digital content, or as a digital-only edition, depending on the situation in summer. The full program for the XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin 2021 will be announced in July.

Diving into queer film archives and new festival direction from 2022

The special 15th edition of XPOSED has been in the making since autumn of 2019. It will show a record number of short films, plus a deep dive into the festival’s love for the archive, celebrating some important works in queer film history. The festival will also integrate an online program that will not only consist of film screenings, but panels, workshops and filmmaker interaction.

It will also be the last edition for Bartholomew Sammut as the festival director. After 15 years, the founder of XPOSED has decided to hand the festival directorship over to Merle Groneweg, who already acted as co-director since 2018.

XPOSED was founded to celebrate Queer Experimental Film Art, connecting the strange, unusual and fabulous films with their audience’, Sammut explains. ‘The goal was always to build the festival to a place where it has created a community and can go on further and develop with new leadership. I am in a privileged position after working with Merle for so many years now, to know, this is the perfect programmer to take over XPOSED.’

7th QUEER SHORT FILM FUND: Enhanced Deadline!

With the QUEER SHORT FILM FUND the festival wants to support queer filmmaking. The current pandemic shows once more the importance of visibility of our community. Due to the postponement of the festival dates, the deadline for submissions will be pushed to the 16th of July! So there is still plenty of time to work on proposals.

The fund is awarded a cash prize of 1,500 €, a voucher for filming equipment worth 2,000 €, provided by 25p* cine support and two days of Grading – including Conforming – with additional creation of a DCP & Web Screener worth 3,000€, provided by Planemo Filmas well as a voucher for the use of one of the dubbing studios in the amount of 2000€ from BUFA. In addition, the fund is accompanied by a mentoring programme: An industry expert advises the winner in five sessions from script development to the production phase and post-production.

Out and About
Queere Sichtbarkeiten in der Sammlung der Berlinischen Galerie

XPOSED cooperates with the volunteer project “Out & About. Queer Visibilities in the Collection of the Berlinische Galerie“. XPOSED has selected six short films from previous years of the festival as well as the upcoming program – the 15th anniversary edition in May 2021. Formally, geographically and thematically, the works represent a broad spectrum. Compilation films about the drag- and trans* scene of the 1980s in Cordoba, Argentina (PLAYBACK) and a portrait of the Ghanaian performance artist VA-BENE stand next to the audiovisual essay GALATÉE À L’INFINI, which deals with the subjugation of the female body. Here, physicality is a key to liberation. It is the starting point not only for the search for new forms of expression, but also for breaking free, as is the case in the immersive poetic reflections on queerness in JOURNEY TO THE CHARBAGH and PIRATE BOYS. Self-determination and appropriation are also carefully celebrated in BATERÍA, in which a lonely camera roams a very special cruising area – and longs for utopian spaces in the present.
