Terror Nullius

Soda_Jerk, Australia, 2018, 53min
TERROR NULLIUS is a political revenge fable which offers an un-writing of Australian national mythology. The sample-based film works entirely within, and against, the official archive in order to achieve a queering and othering of Australian cinema. Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and not-so-nice white guys finish last. Where girl gangs rule the highways, a house is haunted by the spectre of queer Australia and a bicentennial celebration is ravaged by flesh-eating sheep. It’s a beautiful bloody mix of the historical and the speculative, the art house and grindhouse.

What Happened to Her
Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, USA, 2016, 15min
A forensic exploration of our cultural obsession with images of the dead woman on screen. Interspersing found footage from films and police procedural television shows and one actor’s experience of playing the part of a corpse, the film offers a meditative critique on the trope of the dead female body. The visual narrative of the genre, one reinforced through its intense and pervasive repetition, is revealed as a highly structured pageant. Concurrently, the experience of physical invasion and exploitation voiced by the actor pierce the fabric of the screened fantasy. The result is recurring and magnetic film cliché laid bare.
